    JAPANESE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND MEMBERS OF COMMUNIST AND LEFT-WING ORGANISATIONS FOUGHT FIERCE STREET BATTLES WITH POLICE IN YOKOSUKA, ABOUT 30 MILES SOUTH OF TOKYO, ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT DURING A DEMONSTRATION PROTESTING AGAINST THE VISIT OF THE UNITED STATES NUCLEAR SUBMARINE "SEADRAGON".

    ABOUT 13,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION WHICH WHICH WAS STAGED OPPOSITE THE U.S. NAVAL BASE IN YOKOSUKA. THE STREET FIGHTING BROKE OUT WHEN STUDENTS CHARGED A GROUP OF RIOT POLICE GUARDING THE MAIN GATE OF THE BASE.

    BOTTLES, STONES AND OTHER MISSILES WERE THROWN DURING THE SCUFFLES WITH POLICE, AND SCORES OF PEOPLE WERE IN INJURED. POLICE ARRESTED SIX STUDENTS. FOUR OTHERS WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL.

    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS SPONSORED BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY, LEFT-WING ASSOCIATIONS AND THE GENERAL COUNCIL OF TRADE UNIONS OF JAPAN.
