  • Description

AIRLINE AUTHORITIES AT LONDON'S HEATHROW AIRPORT TODAY (FRIDAY) INCREASED THEIR SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS AGAINST SKYJACKING AND BOMB INCIDENTS. FOR THE FIRST TIME SOME PASSENGERS' BAGGAGE WAS SEARCHED BEFORE BOARDING WAS ALLOWED.

TRANS WORLD AIRWAYS, WHICH HAS HAD SEVERAL PLANED HIJACKED, DISPLAYED NOTICES AT CHECK-IN DESKS EXPLAINING TO PASSENGERS THAT WERE COULD BE RANDOM INSPECTIONS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE PASSENGER OF BAGGAGE AND ARTICLES BEING CARRIED. THE SPOT CHECKS WERE MAINLY CARRIED OUT IN THE TERMINAL BUT ONE AIRLINE WENT FURTHER AND MADE MORE SEARCHES AFTER THE PASSENGERS HAD TAKEN THEIR SEATS.

THE JOB OF SECURITY MEN WAS MADE EASIER BY AIRLINE OFFICIALS WHO GAVE HOLDERS OF ARAB PASSPORTS A CARD WITH THE LETTER "A" ON IT, AND AN "I" FOR ISRAELI PASSPORT HOLDERS. AIRLINE SPOKESMEN EXPRESSED THE HOPE THAT PASSENGERS WOULDN'T MIND THE SPOT CHECKS BECAUSE IT WAS FOR THEIR OWN GOOD AND SAFETY.
