  • Description

A defiant alliance of left wingers and Palestinians have vowed to fight Syrian troops if they try to take control in Lebanon.

Lebanon's politicians have been engaged in a seemingly endless round of meetings. On Friday (4 June) the leaders of the Murabitum party, Ibrahim Koleilat and Al Khatib not with left wing leader Kamal Jumblatt. In another part of Beirut, the president-elect, Elias Sarkis held talks with right-wing Christian leaders.

Throughout the day Syrian Mig jet fighters flew low over the city, while gunmen enforced a general strike called by Mr Jumblatt's party in protest against the Syrian intervention. The strike coincided with war-ravaged Beirut's first full day without electricity. Water and fuel shortages are also expected soon.

The Syrian forces which entered Lebanon last week, are dug in along the Bekaa Valley in the east of the country.

According to the Palestinian news agency, WAFA, the confrontation with Syria has reached "the point of an explosion."
