Background: The British Minister of State for Colonial Affairs - Lord Perth - on Oct 24 visited So Uk, one of low cost housing estates the Hong Kong housing authority is building in effort to improve housing on Kowloon Peninsula.
One of the pressing problems in the British Colony of Hong Kong is housing with a population increasing by births and immigration at the rate of more than 150,000 a year.
At the So Uk estate there are sixteen blocks of flats ranging from eight to sixteen storeys, and when the project is completed in 1962, more than five thousand three hundred flats will accommodate some thirty-two thousand people.
Varying in size, the flats accommodate from four to eleven persons, and rents range from GBP(STG) 4 to GBP(STG) 8/12/- per month.
Accommodation provide in the new estates is in sharp contrast with conditions in squatter areas and in old tenements. In the built up areas of the colony a single tenement may house up to 300 tenants living in cubicles or bed spaces. In the new flats, however, there will be ample living space. All the accommodation is of a one-room type with balcony or corridor access plus kitchen, drying verandah and toilets.
Partitioning into living and sleeping areas is left to the tenants, but the Hong Kong Housing Authority has prepared three "show" flats, so that new tenants can work out how they will, subdivide their homes.
The So Uk is the Housing Authority's third scheme, and is the most ambitious so far implemented. Total cost is estimated at GBP(STG) 3,327,044.
