  • Description

The Israeli cabinet today (Wednesday July 29) again postponed its expected approval of the American Middle East peace plan amid last minute efforts to avert a Government crisis.

But observers believed the country's eventual endorsement of the plan -- already accepted by U.A.R. and Jordan -- did not appear to be in doubt. Prime Minister Golda Meir's broad-based National Unity coalition Government is faced with a threatened walk-out of the right-wing Gahal Party. The Gahal party is concerned about the implications of a major Israeli withdrawal from the cease-fire lines.

Mrs. Meir would, however, still command a comfortable majority in the 120-member Knesset (Parliament) at the head of a narrower coalition cabinet.

An eleventh hour compromise with the six ministers of the Gahal Party cannot be excluded when the cabinet resumes discussion of the plan on Thursday (July 30). Today's two-hour session of the 24-member cabinet was curtailed to allow bilateral contacts between Gahal and the majority Labour Party ministers. This could prevent a split in the National Unity government which has ruled the country since the eve of the six-day war over three years ago.

All members of the cabinet, apart from the six Gahal ministers, are now expected to approve the plan -- in view of the latest reassurances received from President Nixon. The American plan calls for a minimum cease-fire lasting 90 days during which U.N. Peace envoy Dr. Gunnar Jarring would resume efforts to bring about an agreement between Israel and the Arab States.
