  • Description

WITH THE SECOND SUCCESSFUL TEST FLIGHT OF THE AMERICAN TFX FOLDING-WING BOMBER AT FORT WORTH IN TEXAS ON WEDNESDAY THERE HAS BEEN INCREASING SPECULATION ON THE FUTURE OF THE BRITISH SUPERSONIC STRIKE AIRCRAFT - THE TSR-2.

DURING ITS TEST FLIGHT, THE BOMBER SUCCESSFULLY MOVED ITS WINGS WHILE IN THE AIR. THE WINGS MOVE FORWARD FOR SLOW SPEED FLYING AND BACKWARDS FOR SUPERSONIC FLIGHT. SOME EXPERTS HAD EXPRESSED DOUBTS AS TO WHETHER THIS PRINCIPLE WOULD WORK IN PRACTICE, BUT THIS LATEST FLIGHT APPEARS TO HAVE SETTLED THIS ISSUE.

NOW THAT THE TFX HAS REACHED THIS STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT, IT SEEMS ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WILL CANCEL THE TSR-2 PROJECT, AND THE ROYAL AIR FORCE ORDER FOR 140 OF THE AIRCRAFT, AND RE-QUIP WITH THE AMERICAN MODEL INSTEAD.

IF THE TSR-2 IS CANCELLED, IT WILL BE AFTER NEARLY THREE MONTHS OF MILITARY AND POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS. ALREADY THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION HAS SPENT GBP190 MILLION ON THE PROJECT. IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT THE CANCELLATION WOULD COST UP TO GBP60 MILLION IN COMPENSATION AND "TIDYING-UP". THERE WOULD BE SERIOUS REDUNDANCIES IN THE AIRCRAFT FACTORIES AS A RESULT.

IT IS IRONICAL THAT THE FOLDING WING DEVELOPMENT WAS THE INVENTION OF A BRITISH DESIGNER, 76-YEAR-OLD DR. BARNES WALLIS. HE BECAME FAMOUS FOR HIS "DAM BUSTER" BOMB. HE BEGAN WORKING ON THE "SWINGING WING" AT THE VICKERS ARMSTRONG FACTORY IN 1945. HIS DESIGN WAS PATENTED IN 1956. IN THE AMERICAN TFX, FULL CREDIT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO DR. WALLIS FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION.
