STUDENT: "We have occupied the Jordanian embassy at 11.30 after we gave a message to the ambassador in support of the Palestinian Liberation movement in Jordan and against the fascist military regime in Jordan."



QUESTION: "How long do you hope to stay there?"



STUDENT: "Well, we have 'phoned the Central Committee in Beirut and we are expecting from them an answer to all our questions and we're going to stay there until we shall receive such an answer."



EMBASSY OFFICIAL: "In fact we were surprised when I opened the door and found a lot of them. As they are not doing any harm to our offices or to any documents of the embassy or even to the personnel of the embassy we did not think of getting them out by force."



QUESTION: "Are you going to let them stay here indefinitely?"



"Well, that depends on their behaviour."

Background: In London on Friday (September 18), a group of 25 Arab students marched into the Jordanian Embassy. The students described their gesture as a preliminary protest against what they called the "criminal fascist regime" in Jordan.

The students waved flags and placards, and police made no serious effort to stop them from entering the embassy. Once inside, they were received by the ambassador, Mr. Saad Juma. An embassy spokesman said they had discussed the situation in Jordan, and that after the talks the demonstrators had been given permission to remain in the embassy.

After the sit-in had lasted five hours, the embassy called in the police to evict the demonstrators. A few students went quietly, some stopped to argue with police, and others left the building by any exit available. There were no reports of any serious trouble or any arrests made, but later in the evening the Union of Arab Students complained of police brutality.
