Background: ELEVEN MEN ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTING TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT OF MRS. BANDARANAIKE IN JANUARY 1962, WERE SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IMPRISONMENT IN COLOMBO ON TUESDAY.

THE VERDICT MARKS THE END OF ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC TRIALS IN CEYLON'S HISTORY. IT LASTED FOR TWO AND A HALF YEARS DURING WHICH THE ACCUSED, WHO INCLUDED PROMINENT ARMED SERVICES OFFICERS, FACED POSSIBLE DEATH SENTENCES.

LARGE CROWDS GATHERED TO WATCH THE ACCUSED BROUGHT BY SPECIAL POLICE VAN TO COURT TO HEAR THE VERDICT. WEEPING RELATIVES WERE LED AWAY WHEN THE COURT'S DECISION BECAME KNOWN. BESIDES THE PRISON TERMS, THE SENTENCED MEN'S PROPERTY WAS CONFISCATED BY THE STATE.

THE COURT HELD THAT ONE OF THE PLOTTERS, COLONEL DE SARAM, DEPUTY COMMANDANT OF THE CEYLON VOLUNTEER FORCES, HAD PLANNED TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT AND SET UP ANOTHER OF HIS OWN MAKING. THE OTHER DEFENDANTS KNEW OF THE PLOT AND THEREFORE BECAME FULL MEMBERS OF THE CONSPIRACY.

ORIGINALLY, A LARGER NUMBER OF SUSPECTED PLOTTERS WERE DETAINED: 15 WERE CLEARED AND RELEASED AND I MAN DIED IN CUSTODY. THE IMPRISONED MEN HAVE ANNOUNCED THROUGH THEIR DEFENCE COUNSEL; THAT THEY WILL APPEAL TO THE PRIVY COUNCIL IN LONDON, THE COMMONWEALTH'S HIGHEST APPEAL COURT.
