  • Description

Flashback to 1931 and to his first journey into the stratosphere was provided when Professor Auguste Piccard, the Swiss balloonist, visited the Brussels Exhibition last week. In the Alluminium Pavilion, he saw once again the airframe of that balloon in which he attained the height of 15,281 metres (50,000 feet). There to greet him were the directors of the pavilion that is housing his historic balloon, together with a deputation of university professors.

Starting from Augsburg, Germany Prof. Piccard's famous aerial flight finished on his landing on the Gurgel Glacier in Austria. In the next year, 1932, he was to reach an even greater height by balloon, 16,201 metres.
