    SIX PEOPLE DIED AND 43 OTHERS WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN PUSAN. SOUTH KOREA, LAST MONDAY (18 MARCH) WHEN THEY WERE FORCED TO JUMP 80 FEET TO ESCAPE A FIRE WHICH BROKE OUT IN A NEW TELEPHONE EXCHANGE BUILDING. TELEPHONE OPERATORS AND OFFICIALS HAD BEEN TRAPPED ON THE FIFTH, SIXTH AND SEVENTH FLOORS WHEN THE FIRE BROKE OUT ON THE FOURTH FLOOR AND SPREAD RAPIDLY.

    THE PUSAN FIRE BRIGADE DID NOT HAVE A FIRE ENGINE EQUIPPED WITH LONG LADDERS TO RESCUE THE WORKERS. INSTEAD THEY SPREAD CUSHIONS THEIR FALL.

    SIX OF THE WORKERS WERE KILLED WHEN THEY JUMPED. NINE FIREMEN AND POLICE WERE INJURED, TRYING TO CATCH THEM.

    A SPOKESMAN SAID LATER THAT MORE WOULD HAVE LIVED HAD THEY JUMPED IN A HORIZONTAL ATTITUDE, INSTEAD OF FEET FIRST.

    POLICE INVESTIGATIONS LATER DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY AN OFFICIAL THROWING A LIGHTED CIGARETTE INTO A CELLULOID WAS E PAPER BASKET.
