  • Description

On the second day (June 21) of his eight-day tour of Congo Kinshasa, King Baudouin of Belgium was accompanied by his host President Mobutu on a visit to the copper-mining centre at Kolwezi, in the south of Katanga Province.

King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola will attend the tenth Independence Anniversary celebrations of Congo-Kinshasa on June 30.

Journalists on the spot have compared the welcome given to the 39 year-old King favourably with that given in 1955 when he made a triumphant tour through what was then a Belgian colony.

The King saw the various stages of copper processing at the Gecomine copper plant in Kolwezi, met the workers, and signed the Visitors' Book.

Copper is the main export of Congo-Kinshasa; nearly 3???,000 tons is mined each year, valued at 180,000 U.S. dollars.

President Mobutu will be accompanying King Baudouin throughout his tour. They enjoy a personal friendship dating from King Baudouin's invitation to the President to make a personal visit to Brussels in 1968.

The visit is designed to cement Belgo-Congolese relations after several years of sometimes bitter dispute.
