TRANSCRIPT: M. NAESSEN: "WE HAVE HEARD A BRIEF SKETCH OF HIS EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES AND OF THE PREPARATION OF HIS SERUM AND HAVE EXAMINED SOME OF HIS CLINICAL RESULTS. THE CLINICAL DATA IS TOO INCOMPLETE AND THE TIME IS TOO SHORT FOR A FINAL JUDGMENT. THERE IS, HOWEVER, A CASE FOR INDEPENDENT EXAMINATION OF HIS LABORATORY WORK. HE HAS BEEN ASKED AND HAS AGREED TO FURNISH MORE COMPLETE ACCOUNT OF HIS LABORATORY TECHNIQUES AND CLINICAL RESULTS."

Background: THE WORK OF THE SELF-TAUGHT FRENCH BIOLOGIST M. GASTON NAESSENS AND HIS ANTI-LEUKAEMIA SERUM, HAS KEPT CORSICA IN THE HEADLINES DURING THE LAST FEW WEEKS. LAST FRIDAY, JUST BEFORE M. NAESSENS LEFT FOR HIS WEEKEND VISIT TO EDINBURGH, TWO MORE LEUKAEMIA SUFFERERS ARRIVED IN THE HOPE OF BEING TREATED. THEY WERE ACCEPTED BRINGING THE NUMBER OF BRITISH CHILDREN BEING TREATED TO FIVE. THE DIFFICULTY OF FINDING HOSPITAL BEDS IS VERY ACUTE AND M. NAESSENS HAS RENEWED HIS APPEAL THAT NO MORE SUFFERERS SHOULD MAKE THE JOURNEY TO THE ISLAND. YET CHILDREN STILL CONTINUE TO ARRIVE -- FROM AMERICA, BELGIUM AND FRANCE.

IN AJACCIO, THE CAPITAL OF CORSICA, THE TREATMENT IS CARRIED OUT AT THE HOSPITAL, WHERE THE PRELIMINARY TESTS ARE MADE, AND AT A PRIVATE CLINIC. THE FIRST BOY TO ARRIVE -- FOUR-YEAR-OLD EDMUND BURKE OF BLACKPOOL, ENGLAND -- IS ALREADY MORE THAN HALF WAY THROUGH A 40-DAY COURSE OF M. NAESSENS'S SERUM.

ON FRIDAY, THE BRITISH CONSUL IN AJACCIO SAID: "IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE THAT NO NEW SUFFERERS SHOULD TRAVEL TO CORSICA. THERE IS A LACK OF BEDS, A LACK OF DOCTORS TO ADMINISTER THE TREATMENT, AND A LACK OF THE SERUM ITSELF."
AFTER M. NAESSENS'S WEEKEND MEETING WITH LEADING -- BUT ANONYMOUS -- MEDICAL EXPERTS IN SCOTLAND, THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS ISSUED:
