Background: With the Moscow Olympics firmly a part of sports history, Soviet citizens are reaping the benefits of the huge expenditure invested in the enve???. Following the conversion of the Olympic village to provide more accommodation, the Soviet authorities have opened the Olympic pool to the public. They also have plans to expand the facility to cope with increasing future needs.

SYNOPSIS: Moscow's Olympic swimming pool is less than a year old, but already it enjoys a reputation for providing competitors with some of the best facilities in the world. Those facilities increasingly are being taken advantage of by the Soviet public. Four months after the twenty-second Olympics the venue is catering for a different clientele.

Swimming enthusiasts and those who just want to learn how to swim are flocking to the pool. The pool's administrators have completed agreements with scores of offices, industrial enterprises and educational establishments for sharing the facilities. Plans are also underway to build a 25-metre pool and two 12-metre shallow pools for teaching. These are in addition to the existing three-basin pool, used mainly for training and competitions.

For the young a chance to emulate their Olympic idols has been provided. When the expansion of the complex is completed, season tickets will be sold to those who want to learn to swim. Systematic training sessions have begun already, with highly skilled athletes hired to provide lessons. Like the Moscow Olympic village, the city's Olympic pool is being adapted by the Soviet authorities for greater everyday use by its citizens. It's a move appreciated by youngsters whose road to Olympic fame could well start here.
