  • Description

The political importance of education was emphasised by President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania on Monday (21 June). He was opening a five-day conference on adult education and development.

SYNOPSIS: He told the delegates that education would stop people passively accepting the conditions of their life. He said if people were aroused by education and could not get the change they wanted, they would become discontented, if not hostile, towards whatever authority they regarded as responsible for the failure. Because of that, adult education was a highly political activity.

President Nyerere said the priority education was given in official spending was one of the most political decisions a government could make. He said education aroused curiosity and questioning and an educated population would challenge the actions of its elected representatives. The delegates came from about 80 countries. They'll discuss various educational and development problems in working groups and hear national case studies. They'll then consider a final plan of action.
