Background: The chiefs and people of Ghana are rejoicing over the National Liberation Council's assurance that it will respect the instruction of chieftaincy. The Council has also said that it will recognise the role which the chiefs will paly in the development of Ghana. the asantehene, Sir Osei Agyoman Prempeh the second, has expressed his profound thanks to the Council.
At his Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene told newsmen that the institution of chieftaincy suffered much under the tyranny of the Nkrumah government. He said he was subjected to many forms of humiliation. He was deprived of all his sources of income. He said many other chiefs lost their practice and their lands were taken from them. He said the National Liberation Council has inspired the chiefs and raised their hopes for a better life.
The Asantehene hoped that all the other chiefs in the country will continue to play a noble role in rebuilding Ghana. He said the NLC's policy towards food production in the country came as great relief to him. He said abundant food supply at reasonable prices is very important. He expressed the hope that the Council will tackle the food production problem vigorously. On the rehabilitation of released detainees, the \asantehene said he is extremely grateful to the Council for appointing a National Relief Committee to handle this important issue.
