  • Description

The people of Amman, still plagued by sporadic outbreaks of violence in the wake of the civil war that tore the nation apart in September, are doing their best to join in the Christmas celebrations.

More shop keepers than expected have decorated their windows in Amman, but their delay in doing so is witness to their hesitation. Many shops show no signs of the Christmas spirit. Instead, bullet holes in walls and doors are a grim reminder of the reasons for this year's abstinence.

Although public celebrations and feasts have been avoided in Jordan since the occupation of the West Bank, night prayers were still offered. But for Christmas, the usual night prayers and masses have been cancelled.

In spite of the surface disapproval, sweetmeats and Christmas trees find many buyers, and the toy shops are all full.
