  • Description

In the Jordan Valley, Israeli troops have been taking advantage of the ceasefire to bull-doze trees and bushes along the banks of the river, and to build barbed wire barricades.

The line between israel and Jordan, which runs down the middle of the river, has seen plenty of tension since the 90-day ceasefire came into force on the seventh of August.

There have been a number of violations of the area by Arab commandos, and also exchanges between regular Jordanian and Israeli forces.

On Friday (August 14) Israeli jets attacked Arab guerrilla targets in Jordan, according to a military spokesman in Tel Aviv, following shelling the previous night of the Israeli villages Maoz Haim and Yardena.

It was the second air attack on guerrilla targets in Jordan by rael since the ceasefire. In the first on the 13th of August, Israeli aircraft hit a guerrilla base in Jordan.

The most serious danger of the ceasefire remains in the Suez Canal area however. Protests that the Egyptians have caused a violation by moving Soviet-made SAM missiles nearer to the Canal were lodged at the U.S. State Department, Washington, by Israel's Ambassador Yitzhak Rabin on Thursday (August 13).
