  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR VOTE TOMORROW (30 JULY) FOR THEIR FIRST-EVER HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY. BUT WHOEVER IS ELECTED THERE IS NO CHANGE OF A CHANGE IN THE BRITISH COLONY'S DETERMINED STAND TO OPPOSE SPANISH ATTEMPTS TO REGAIN THE "ROCK".

THE TWO MAJOR GROUPS FIGHTING FOR 15-SEATS ARE THE INTEGRATION WITH BRITAIN PARTY, LED BY MAJOR R.J. PELIZE, AND THE GIBRALTAR LABOUR PARTY, UNDER SIR JOSHUA HASSAN.

THE INTEGRATIONISTS WOULD LIKE TO SEE GIBRALTAR BECOME AS MUCH A PART OF BRITAIN AS THE ISLE OF WIGHT ALTHOUGH MAJOR PELIZE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE ROCK'S FREE PORT STATUS PRESERVED.

SIR JOSHUA HASSAN ARGUES IN FAVOUR OF GIBRALTARIANS GOVERNING THEMSELVES IN ALL INTERNAL MATTERS.

THE NEW 15-MAN HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY WILL REPLACE THE OLD LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, WHICH RULED WITH THE GOVERNOR AS CHAIRMAN. THE NEW ASSEMBLY WAS AGREED ON AS PART OF A NEW CONSTITUTION -- PUT FORWARD IN A BRITISH ORDER-IN-COUNCIL LAST MAY.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE NEW CONSTITUTION IS ITS RETENTION OF THE LINK WITH BRITAIN.

THE TWO PARTY LEADERS YESTERDAY ADDRESSED ELECTION RALLIES.
