• Short Summary

JOSEPH M. WALKER, A CIVILIAN PILOT FOR THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE AGENCY, SET A?

  • Description

JOSEPH M. WALKER, A CIVILIAN PILOT FOR THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE AGENCY, SET A NEW WORLD ALTITUDE RECORD ON FRIDAY, WHILE FLYING THE X-15 HIGH-ALTITUDE EXPERIMENTAL ROCKET PLANE. WALKER BOARDED TO 350,000 FT, BREAKING THE EARLIER RECORD OF 314,750 FT HELD BY AIR FORCE MAJOR ROBERT WHITE. THE EARLIER RECORD WAS SET 17 JULY, 1962, ALSO IN THE X-15.

WALKER'S RECORD WAS UNEXPECTED. THE FLIGHT HAS BEEN PLANNED TO REACH AN ALTITUDE OF 315,000 FT., AND WAS BILLED AS A WARM-UP FOR AN ATTEMPT AT A 350,000 FT. FLIGHT LATER IN THE SUMMER. HOWEVER WALKER'S ROCKET ENGINE BURNED FOR 85 SECONDS INSTEAD OF THE PLANNED 83 SECONDS. THE TWO SECOND DIFFERENCE WAS ENOUGH TO PROPEL THE CRAFT TO THE RECORD HEIGHT.
