  • Description

Two men on board a fire-fighting aircraft were killed in Corsica on Wednesday (July 25) when it crashed into the fire they were trying to fight.

The French Canadair seaplane hit power cables as it flew low over the fire pouring its cargo of sea water on the burning forest.

The fire, which started on Tuesday (July 24th) had already destroyed more than about 2 1/2 thousand acres (1,000 hectares) of woods and crops by Wednesday night.

More than six hundred men were brought in to fight the blaze which swept through fields and woodland outside the city of Bastia.

People living in the area fled their homes and at one stage, the Bastia gasworks were threatened.
