    THE EUROPEAN OPEN MODERN DANCING CHAMPIONSHIP WAS HELD IN LONDON TONIGHT (MONDAY). DESPITE A STRONG CONTINENTAL CHALLENGE, BRITAIN RETAINED HER UNBEATEN RECORD, TAKING THE FIRST TWO PLACES. HOLLAND, WEST GERMANY AND DENMARK DID THE BEST OF THE CHALLENGERS.

    TEN COUPLES, ALL PROFESSIONAL, COMPETED FOR THE 1965 TITLE -- AND PRIZES AMOUNTING TO GBP500. THEY HAD TO DO FIVE DANCES: WALTZ, TANGO, VIENNESE WALTZ, FOXTROT AND QUICKSTEP.

    THE OUTCOME WAS A REPEAT OF LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONSHIP, WITH BRITAIN'S PETER EGGLETON AND BRENDA WINSLADE (NUMBER 3) RETAINING THEIR TITLE. BRITAIN'S OTHER ENTRANTS, MICHAEL NEEDHAM AND MONICA DUNSFORD (NUMBER 13) WERE SECOND.

    HOLLAND'S WIM VOETEN AND JEANNE ASSMAN (NUMBER 8) WERE THIRD, WEST GERMANY'S RUDOLF AND MECHTILD TRAUTZ (NUMBER 7) FOURTH, AND DENMARK'S JOHN AND ELLA FREDERIKSEN (NUMBER 12) FIFTH.

    AUSTRIA, FINLAND, FRANCE, ITALY AND SWEDEN WERE ALSO REPRESENTED.
