  • Description

SCOPE: This coverage is of Sergeant Don Yeary, the only Game Warden at White Sands Missile Range, and one of his more interesting charges -- the African Gemsbok.

BACKGROUND: White Sands, New Mexico, is best known as a missile range and atomic test site. In contrast, much of its 4,000 square miles are also home for some unusual cattle. New Mexico officials asked the Army to take a few African Antelopes out of the zoo and look after them -- that was eight years ago. Today there is a growing herd of about 200 Gemsbok who seem to be at home on a range where deer and antelope still roam. Many of the animals under Sergeant Yeary's protection are ones that he had not seen before this assignment, making his job interesting and unique.
