  • Description

IN THE INDONESIAN BORNEO STATE OF PONTIANAK, HUNDREDS OF CHINESE NATIONALS ARE AFRAID THAT THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC HAS NO PLANS TO RESCUE THEM FROM OVERCROWDED, MAKESHIFT CAMPS. THE CHINESE, MOSTLY SMALL TRADERS AND THEIR FAMILIES, FACE AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE.

THE CHINESE ARE AWAITING SHIPS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC TO EVACUATE THEM BUT SO FAR THE INDONESIAN MILITARY AUTHORITIES IN BORNEO HAVE RECEIVED NO WORD THAT ANY ARE BEING SENT. THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT'S VIEWPOINT IS THAT ALL CHINESE WHO HAVE RETAINED THEIR CITIZENSHIP, SHOULD BE DEPORTED BUT THAT TRANSPORT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PEKING GOVERNMENT.

THE CHINESE HAVE BEEN SHIFTED BACK FROM THE BORDER WITH THE MALAYSIAN STATE OF SARAWAK BY THE INDONESIAN ARMY IN A JOINT SECURITY DRIVE WITH MALAYSIAN FORCES IN MOPPING UP THE END OF SUKARNO'S CONFRONTATION POLICY AGAINST MALAYSIA. THE MAIN AIM WAS TO STOP COMMUNIST GUERILLAS, WHO HAVE BEEN REFUSED TO SURRENDER EITHER TO THE INDONESIAN OR THE MALAYSIAN ARMIES, FROM OBTAINING FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES FROM THE TRADERS.

THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC IS USING ONE PASSENGER LINER TO PICK UP 700 CHINESE NATIONALS IN A MONTHLY ROUND TRIP.
