  • Description

The hurricane "Donna" - which swept across the Atlantic killing at least 126 people - lashed into Florida Sept 10 leaving a trail of devastation and floods, and causing four deaths. The streets of Miami were flooded and storm debris littered the scene. Falling trees brought down power lines and over 1000 homes were left without electricity.

At 150 miles-per-hour, the winds hit the Keys, the chain of islands off Florida, and casualties were reported from Tavernier, Marathon and Islamorada. Many people were evacuated and the causeway to the coast was under five feet of water.

In Washington, the Red Cross said the storm had been a "major disaster". It was reported to have struck hardest at Fort Myers where the wind unroofed 60 houses and stores, blowing some of them over, and stripped the town of all its trees.

Before striking the coast of Florida, the hurricane had torn through Puerto Rico and some of the islands of the South Atlantic, causing an estimated 126 deaths and injuring hundreds.
