  • Description

An unusual exhibition, called "Olfactory Ideas", opened in the Madrid Municipal Museum on Monday (3 April). The exhibition of smells, organised by the Juan Miro foundation, attempts to prove that "smell" has a place in the cultural world of museums and that, indeed, it may prove the most refined of all the senses. The crowds attending this month-long exhibition will be reminded that smells can provoke emotions, desires, transmit feelings and evoke memories of the past.

SYNOPSIS: The people of Madrid flocked to the exhibition with curiosity and to gain a new appreciation of that most important organ, the nose.

Those whose sense of smell was not hampered by health problems such as colds, were able to experience a wide range of sensations.

On arrival, visitors were given a packet of paper strips to be dipped into various scent bottles. They were encouraged to take the scent strips home with them. It's a rare museum which allows visitors to walk off with the exhibits.

Animal smells proved especially popular for the young. This boy sniffed a cat odour.

A new idea for home decoration -- scented wall panels. The blue one reportedly exudes a sea breeze smell, the green, a freshly mown lawn, and the red, a rather more sordid odour.

A table set for eating. The smells of food and wine to provoke hunger, and perhaps suggest a dinner menu. At the end of the tour of the sniffing halls, some of the visitors undoubtedly left the exhibit with a long forgotten experience twigged by a scent or two. And new thoughts about the power of smell.
