    More than three hundred chanting demonstrators staged a noisy demonstration at Sydney's Kingsford-Smith Airport on Sunday (July 4) when the touring South African Rugby Union team flew in from Melbourne. The South Africans were flown to Sydney in a fleet of six light aircraft.

    The demonstrators, who were kept well away from the touring players, made no attempt to break through a strong police cordon. They followed the South Africans to their hotel in the seaside suburb of Bondi where they staged an all-night vigil.

    Meantime, leaders of the South African team have reaffirmed that the tour will continue.

    SYNOPSIS: More than three hundred shouting demonstrators staged a noisy demonstration at Sydney's Kingsford-Smith Airport on Sunday when the visiting South African Rugby Union team arrived from Melbourne.

    The demonstrators, carried placards and shouted anti-apartheid slogans but made no attempt to break through police barriers as the South Africans walked from their fleet of light aircraft.

    The South African team appeared unperturbed by the demonstrators as they walked across the airport apron into the terminal building.

    Later the demonstrators followed the South Africans to their hotel in the seaside suburb of Bondi. There, they set up a night-long vigil, shouting slogans and blowing hooters and whistles.

    Again the touring players seemed unruffled by the demonstrators.

    Other demonstrators arriving at the hotel swelled the ranks of the protestors to more than one thousand. The South Africans calmly watched the demonstration from the hotel roof. Later at, a special reception, tour leaders reaffirmed that the tour would continue.
