  • Description

MORE THAN 30-THOUSAND PEOPLE OF THE JAPANESE CITY OF HIROSHIMA ON FRIDAY REMEMBERED THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DROPPING OF THE ATOMIC BOMB ON THE CITY WITH PRAYERS FOR PEACE AND DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

AT EXACTLY 0815 HOURS LOCAL TIME, HIROSHIMA BECAME SILENT FOR ONE MINUTE AS THE HALF MILLION INHABITANTS REFLECTED ON THE EXPLOSION PRECISELY 20 YEARS BEFORE IN WHICH 60-THOUSAND PEOPLE DIED.

THE MEMORIAL CEREMONY AT THE HIROSHIMA PEACE PARK WAS ATTENDED BY MANY PEOPLE WHO SURVIVED THE HORROR OF THE ATOMIC BOMB IN 1945, AND MANY PEOPLE WHOSE RELATIVES HAVE SINCE DIED FROM THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION.

THE CEREMONY WAS HELD UNDER GREY SKIES WITH THE THREAT OF A TYPHOON IN THE AIR. IT OPENED WITH THE MAYOR OF HIROSHIMA PLACING A LIST CONTAINING THE NAMES OF 49 PEOPLE WHO HAD DIED DURING THE PAST YEAR FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE ATOMIC BOMB IN A MEMORIAL STONE.

LATER, ONE THOUSAND PIGEONS, SYMBOLS OF PEACE, WERE RELEASED.

IN THE UNITED STATES, THE CREWS OF THE AIRCRAFT WHICH CARRIED THE HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI ATOMIC BOMBS HELD A REUNION. THEY INCLUDED JACOB BESER, RADAR OBSERVER, AND KERMIT BEHAN, BOMBADIER ON THE HIROSHIMA RAID. ALSO PRESENT WAS GENERAL SWEENEY,THE PILOT OF THE AIRCRAFT WHICH CARRIED THE SECOND ATOMIC BOMB, DROPPED ON NAGASAKI ON AUGUST 9, 1945.

ALL THREE MEN SAID THEY HAD NO SECOND THOUGHTS OR FEELINGS OF GUILT ABOUT THE HISTORIC ROLES THEY PLAYED.
