THE STUDENTS WERE DEMONSTRATING AGAINST PROPOSED EDUCATIONAL REFORMS AFFECTING INDEPENDENT HIGH SCHOOLS. SEVEN HUNDRED OF THEM TRIED TO MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE EDUCATION MINISTRY TO SUBMIT A RESOLUTION PROTESTING AGAINST THE MEASURES. POLICE BROKE UP THE MARCH BEFORE THE STUDENTS REACHED THE MINISTRY.

DURING A PROTEST MEETING PRECEDING THE MARCH, THE DEAN OF THE PANTIOS HIGH SCHOOL, PROFESSOR TENEKIDES, TRIED TO DISUADE THE STUDENTS FROM CARRYING OUT THE MARCH. HE PROMISED TO SEE THE MINISTER, AND DISCUSS WITH HIM THEIR PROBLEMS.

CARRYING PLACARDS, AND SHOUTING SLOGANS CALLING FOR THE RESIGNATION OF THE EDUCATION MINISTER, THE STUDENTS THEN MARCHED FOR THE MINISTRY BUILDING. POLICE INTERVENED, AND IN THE FIGHTING WHICH BROKE OUT, 40 OF THE STUDENTS WERE INJURED, AND TEN WERE SAID TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN UP TO HOSPITAL.
