  • Description

The Junior Grand Prix motor race at Aix-les-Bains, France, May 22, ended in disaster when a wooden footbridge, crowded with spectators, collapsed on the track during the race. British race driver Chris Threlfall - approaching the bridge at 120 m.p.h. when it fell - jammed on his brakes but skidded into the mass of wreckage and spectators at high speed. He was killed instantly, and so were four spectators. Two more died later in hospital and other were seriously injured.

After the tragedy, the organisers called the race off, and now an injury into the disaster is to be held. 27-year-old bachelor Chris Threlfall was a member of the BMC Elva team, and was formerly a BOAC pilot.
