  • Description

The South American Athletics Championships, being held this year in Lima, Peru, opened on Saturday. With a display by parachutists and girl dancers, the opening ceremony was just about as strenuous as anything in the games themselves. But our coverage also incudes competition from one of the first events, the shot putt, won by Jose Jacques of Brazil, with Argentinians Juan Turry and Mario Peretti second and third.

SYNOPSIS: Lima, capital of Peru, has come up with a spectacular way of opening an international athletics contest. On Saturday, parachutists diving into a stadium in the city ensured widest possible publicity for the opening of the South American Athletics Championships.

In fact, with the male parachutists, followed by girl dancers performing some lively traditional numbers, the opening ceremony was very nearly as strenuous as anything to be seen in the sports arena during the ensuing week.

But the ceremony also showed the Olympics influence, with a torchbearer lighting the flame that will burn throughout the games, while contingents from the competing countries of South America paraded.

One of the first events -- the shot putt. And this is Juan Turry of the Argentine competing. Turry did well.

So did Argentinian team-mate Mario Peretti.

But neither of them could match this throw by Brazil's shot putt star, Jose Jacques.

Officials measure out the throw, and at sixteen metres eight-five centimetres Jacques becomes one of the first winners in the 1971 games. The two Argentinians, Juan Turry and Mario Peretti, were second and third.
