  • Description

Apart from being one of England's most extensive and picturesque woodland areas, the New Forest in Hampshire is well known for its hundreds of roaming, partly wild ponies. Used to traffic and wonder-eyed tourists alike, they wander unconcerned through forest and heath, grazing by the roadside and sometimes taking a snack from a family picnic.

At Beaulieu Road, Sept 8, some 600 of them, rounded up in the New Forest, came up for the annual sale. There were mares and foals, ponies and horses, a number of them already trained, variously described as "quiet to ride", "good jumper" and "suitable for children".

From what any visitor to the New Forest can see for himself it is hardly surprising to find the quadrupeds dubbed as "used to all traffic", but it should be a great consolation to buyers to pick up a lot marked "easy to catch". That, certainly, goes only for a minority of them. With all their outward placidity, self-respecting New Forest ponies will rarely allow anyone to touch them.
