  • Description

In Lebanon, six people died on Monday (23 July) when a jet crashed in flames at the country's main airport at Beirut.

SYNOPSIS: The cargo jet was attempting to land at Beirut International Airport when it crashed on the runway. It burst into flame immediately.

The Boeing 707 jet was on a training flight when the tragedy occurred. Beirut's state-owned radio said the pilot had been attempting a trail touch-down and immediate take-off. The plane's right wing apparently hit the runway, causing it to plough into the ground not far from the terminal building.

The pilot and five trainees were thought to have died almost immediately. They were all Lebanese. The Boeing 707 belonged to Trans Mediterranean Airways (TMA), and the owners said they did not think sabotage was the cause of the crash.
