Fiji's flag flew alongside those of other member nations of the U.N. for the first?
Fiji's flag flew alongside those of other member nations of the U.N. for the first time yesterday (Wednesday 21st October). Secretary General U Thant officiated at a simple flag-raising ceremony attended by the Fijian representative Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and a small group of U.N. officials.
Fiji....a cluster of South Pacific islands, east of Australia and north of New Zealand....was granted independence on October 10th, after 96 years of British rule. It has now become the 127th member country of the United Nations. The Fijian flag, now flying alongside those of other member nations, has a coat of arms on a pale blue background, and a small Union Jack in the top left corner.
