  • Description

The People's Republic of China maintains commercial relations with more than 140 countries. 50 of these nations have formal trade agreements with China. The largest is Japan.

Throughout the week, businessmen from various parts of the world have been entering China via the bridge at Lowu, Hong Kong. The occasion is the autumn session of the 1973 Chinese Export Commodities Fair.

By train, the delegates, among them 2,400 Japanese, arrive in Kwangchow, the southern Chinese city which has staged the bi-annual Trade Fair since it first started in 1957.

Staying at the Kwangchow Hotel, opposite the main Trade Fair centre, the Japanese delegates, representing 1,500 companies, have been moving across the street each day for talks with their Chinese counterparts on 800 different commodities.

The feeling among the Japanese is optimistic, especially after the recent successes of Ritachi -- which secured a 72 million US Dollars last year.

But with talks currently underway on prospects of laying undersea. pipelines and projects like containerisation, trade between the two countries could top the 2 billion US Dollar mark.
