  • Description

The revolt against President Goulart of Brazil succeeded despite an eleventh-hour attempt by his supporters to rally popular support for his regime.

Goulart countered with a rally at which he explained his programme of land reform and he said foreign money was helping to finance his opposition.

He met with non-commissioned officers to rally their support. The corporals and sergeants were sympathetic to the navymen who mutinied and to Goulart.

Tanks and troops guarded the palace of Rio's governor, Carlos Lacerda, an anti-Goulart man.
