Background: Roger de Vlaeminck of Belgium led all the way to win his first World Professional Cyclocross Championship on Sunday (26 January) at Melchnau in Switzerland.

The 27-year-old road racer clocked one hour, nine minutes and 53 seconds over the muddy 23.94-kilometre (14.87-mile) course to finish 31 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Albert Zweifel. Another Swiss rider, Peter Frischknecht, was placed a distant third.

The sentimental favourite of the 20,000 spectators was the winner's 29-year-old brother, Eric de Vlaeminck -- seven times world champion and making a comeback after a nervous breakdown and a year's layoff. But although the elder de Vlaeminck was in the thick of the running for much of the race, he finished fourth, and threw his mud-clogged bicycle into the air in disgust.
