    Britain's 18-year-old Ian Black, of Aberdeen, triple champion of Europe. set a new European 400-metre record, when he won the 440 yards freestyle event in an international swimming match against Russia at Blackpool, Apr 29. At the end of the first day Britain led with 54 to 42 points.

    Black, who had been out of the water for a week due to illness, beat the first Russian by 18 yards, clocking 4 min 27.5 secs, and knocking nine-tenths of a second off the record he set up here eighteen months ago. Second was Russia's V. Androsov, 4 min 38.8 secs; third, Britain's J. Martin-Dye, 4min 41.6 secs; and fourth, Russian B. Nikitin, 4min 45.6 secs, who finished second to Black in the Budapest European championship.

    Earlier, N. Steward, Britain, won the women's 110 yards freestyle in 1 min 5.1 secs, staying two-fifths of a second, with 1 min 6.4 secs - the same time as that clocked by D. Wilkinson. M. Shamalj of Russia was 1.13 seconds behind.

    G. Sykes, Britain, fought a desperate battle in the 110 yards backstroke, beating Russias's V. Mandrekin by 0.7 seconds, with 1 min 5.1 secs. Third was G. Kuvaldin, Russia, 1 min 7.3 secs; fourth 15-year-old R. Jones of Britain, 1 min 8.9 secs.

    On the second day of the match, Apr 30, the British swimmers increased their lead to win with 106 to 75 points.
