    THE POLICE ACTION, WHICH RESULTED VILLAGERS LINED UP TO OBSTRUCT BULLDOZERS CLEARING A CONSTRUCTION CAME SITE FOR THE NINE, WAS THE CULMINATION OF UNREST OF THE ISLAND. THE INCIDENT HAS SPARKED OFF A REACTION THROUGHOUT THE KIETA REGION OF BOUGANVILLE.

    THE PEOPLE OF THE REGION HAVE BEEN ORGANISING PROTEST MEETINGS TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION. ONE GATHERING WAS ADDRESSED BY MR. PAUL LAPUN, THE MEMBER FOR SOUTH BOUGANVILLE IN THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY.

    AFTER THE ADDRESS, VILLAGERS HELD A HALF-DAY CONFERENCE, EXPRESSED THEIR UNANIMOUS OPPOSITION TO THE COMPULSORY ACQUISITION OF THE LAND AND FORMED AN ASSOCIATION TO FIGHT THE TAKE-OVER.

    THE DISTRICT COMMISSIONER OF BOUGANVILLE HAS EVEN EXPRESSED THE FEAR THAT THE ANGRY VILLAGERS MIGHT RESORT TO HUMAN SACRIFICE TO OBSTRUCT THE MINING PROJECT.
