  • Description

After the Ford Motor Company had told the Chilean Government last week that it had decided to close down its 3-year-old plant at Casablanca near Santiago, several hundred workers took over the installation which was by then lying idle.

Ford executives have told Chile's President Allende that the closure had been brought about by the uncertainty of the Chilean
automotive industry. No cars have been produced at the Casablanca plant since January. It had been built at a cost of six million dollars, but according to the company, had become impossible to operate at a profit because of import regulations and price controls.

The government has proposed reducing the number of car assembly plants in Chile from 22 down to three or four.....with licences to be granted only to those countries which present tenders most favourable to the national economy. Ford retail agencies have warned that the closure could mean unemployment for several thousand more workers. The Government has called the closure illegal, fined the company 40 thousand dollars, and threatened further reprisals.
