  • Description

The fifty-foot trawler Boy Roel left the port of Tauranga, New Zealand Saturday on a protest voyage to the French atomic test zone at Mururoa Atoll.

The Boy Roel's captain and five crew members will be at sea ten-days before they reach the Pacific test zone. The boat ill sail into the zone even though two nuclear weapons have reportedly already been detonated.

The ship will turn back only if the government of New Zealand or some other Pacific country takes what the voyage's organisers, the Peace Media Research Group, claims are "real effective actions" to prevent the French from continuing the tests. The group also plans to send two other ships into the test zone n the near future.

The Ketch Greenpeace II left for the test zone a week before the Boy Roel, but no radio contact has been reported from her crew since then.

SYNOPSIS: Even as uncertainty remains about whether the French atomic tests are continuing in the Pacific protestors are launching new efforts to thwart them...The latest ship sent to the test zone at Mururoa Atoll was the fifty-foot trawler Boy Roel, here being provisioned at Tauranga New Zealand.

The Boy Roel's captain and crew of five will be at sea ten-days before they reach the test zone where two bombs have already been detonated. But, despite the tests having started, the ship left Tauranga on Saturday.

The voyage's organisers say the ship will not turn back unless "effective action" is taken by a Pacific government to have the French halt the tests. The Boy Roel will join Greenpeace Two which left for the test site a week earlier.
