  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA VISITED THE NAKAMBALA SUGAR ESTATE AT MAZABUKA ON FRIDAY. THE ESTATE IS BEING DEVELOPED ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER KAFUE, 100 MILES SOUTH OF LUSAKA.

A TOTAL OF 5,800 ACRES (2,346 HECTARES) OF SUGAR CANE IS TO BE PLANTED ON THE NAKAMBALA STATE, AND A NEW FACTORY IS TO BEGIN OPERATIONS IN 1968. SOME 295,000 TONS OF CANE IS EXPECTED TO BE CRUSHED BETWEEN MAY AND OCTOBER IN 1968, TO PRODUCE ZAMBIA'S TOTAL REQUIREMENTS ESTIMATED AT 32,700 TONS OF RAW SUGAR.

DURING HIS TOUR, PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAW THE PROGRESS IN THE BUILDING OF THE FACTORY, WHICH HAS TO BE READY FOR "STEAM TRIALS" BY APRIL 1968. TO PRODUCE SUGAR FROM CANE, THE STALKS ARE FIRST BROKEN UP INTO FINE PIECES AND THEN CRUSHED THROUGH A SERIES OF HEAVY MILLS TO EXTRACT THE JUICE AND SUGARS. WASTE MATERIAL IS BURNT IN SPECIAL BOILERS TO PRODUCE STEAM TO OPERATE THE ENTIRE FACTORY.

THE NAKAMBALA FACTORY WILL HAVE AN INITIAL CAPACITY OF 100 TONS OF CANE AN HOUR WITH PROVISION FOR EXPANSION UP TO 180 TONS. THE COST OF THE FACTORY WILL AMOUNT TO WELL OVER HALF OF THE TOTAL COST OF THE ENTIRE PROJECT, WHICH WILL BE OVER GBP 6,000,000 STERLING.

AFTER THE VISIT TO THE ESTATE, PRESIDENT KAUNDA WENT TO A NEARBY VILLAGE WHERE HE WAS PRESENTED WITH A LEOPARD SKIN. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MR DIALLO TELLI, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ORGANISATION FOR AFRICAN UNITY (OUA).
