  • Description

Chang Shih Chieh, leader of China's team on the joint Sino-Nepalese Boundary Commission, and China's first ambassador to Nepal, was greeted on arrival at Katmandu Airport, Aug 2, by the Royal Military Secretary, Soviet Ambassador Zabrudin, the Chairman of the Nepal-China Friendship Association, and a 200-strong crowd. On Aug 5 he attended a ceremonial Court Durbar where he met King Mahendra and renewed acquaintance with Premier Koirala, whom he met in China last March.

The Boundary Commission was set up by a March agreement signed in Peking, but this will be its first session; a hasty convening seemed necessary after the June 28 Mustang incident, in which Chinese troops fired on a Nepalese patrol mistaking them for "rebel bandits", and killed an officer. Nepalese authorities maintained Chinese troops were on Nepalese territory.
