  • Description

A HUGE JAPANESE TANKER COLLIDED WITH A NORWEGIAN OIL TANKER AND SAWED ITS WAY ACROSS THE BOW, ON THE AFTERNOON OF APRIL 20. THE COLLISION TOOK PLACE OFF RAFFLES LIGHTHOUSE, 12 MILES SOUTH-WEST OF SINGAPORE.

THE 48,000-TON JAPANESE TANKER - "RIYO MARU" - AND THE NORWEGIAN OIL TANKER, THE 18,000-TON "BRARENA", WERE LOCKED TOGETHER FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE "RIYO MARU" BROKE FREE.

AS THE SHIPS CAME APART, THE "RIYO MARU" SWUNG ROUND AND HER REAR SMASHED THE PORT SIDE OF THE "BRARENA".

THE JAPANESE TANKER WAS REPORTED TO HAVE FAILED TO STOP TO FIND OUT WHAT DAMAGE IT HAD CAUSED TO THE SMALLER SHIP.

THE CRIPPLED "BRARENA" LIMPED INTO SINGAPORE HARBOUR WITH A GAPING HOLE IN HER PORT SIDE - A TWISTED MASS OF STEEL. THREE OF HER STORAGE TANKS WERE PUNCTURED.

THE 16-YEAR-OLD "BRARENA" WAS IN BALLAST. SHE HAD DISCHARGED HER LOAD OF OIL IN HONGKONG AND WAS RETURNING TO NORWAY TO BE SCRAPPED.
