  • Description

A revolutionary million-dollar harness racing track, designed to pamphlet the hooves of horses, will be opened to the public Friday night June 18th.

Laurel Raceway, halfway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., sports the newest king of track surface. Asphalt is the base for the new five-eighths mile tartan track. Next, a mixture of synthetic resins....and then granules of the same material, spread on top.

On hand at Laurel (Sunday)....many of harness racing's top driver-trainers.....to test and dedicate the new oval.

Inspecting a sample of the tartan surfacing material are Stanley Dancer, who won more than a million dollars in purses in 1964...and veteran Johnny Simpson. Simpson says the new material may revolutionize horse racing.

The durable, non-skid surface, developed by the 3M Company, is practically indestructible. Track observes say it makes horses feel more secure underfoot...and may make possible new speed records. The drip-dry track can be as important to horse racing as the starting gate, or the photo finish. The million dollar carpet at Laurel may signal the end of an era....for mudders....and signal a new era of all weather racing.
