Soccer....and Italy demolished Hungary with two goals in a minute for a 3-1 win a Mar Del Plata stadium on Tuesday (6 June). This left them with a palace in the last eight of the World Cup finals all but in their grasp. The Italians were never the defensive-minded side which had been expected to play in Argentina. They ripped apart a Hungarian line-up weakened by the absence of midfield pair Andras Torocsik and Tibor Nyilasi....both suspended for one game after being sent off in the match against Argentina.
SYNOPSIS: Hungary playing from left to right in white, looked ragged throughout the game but they had the first chance at goal with a shot from Nagy just going over the top of the bar.
The Hungarians had the unhappy distinction of having the worst behaviour record so far among the 16 World Cup finalists and nothing seemed to go their way on the night. Italy's first opportunity to score came with the shot by Bettega which hit the bar.
Italy's attacking policy was clear from the start and Casio's shot on this occasion was saved on the line by the Hungarian goalkeeper.
After a forceful opening the Italians went ahead in the 34th minute when Paolo Rossi leapt on to a loose ball following a cross from Marco Tardelli.
A minute later the stylish Italian striker Roberto Bettega made it two-nil with a fine shot.
As soon as the second half began it was Italy again on the attack. Bettaga and the rest of the Italian from men made the most of a week Hungarian defence with the striker's shot again hitting the bar.
Twenty minutes into the second half and Romeo Benetti of Italy sealed Hungary's fate with a 30-metre drive. Benetti is a player usually noted for his defensive qualities.
However Hungary did pick up consolation goal just 10 minutes from the end of the match. Second-half substitute Andras Toth made full use of a penalty after Karoly Csapo of hungary had been pushed by Mauro Bellugi.
