  • Description

AMERICA'S RACIAL TROUBLES -- PRESIDENT KENNEDY IS EXPECTED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) TO CALL FOR AN END TO SEGREGATION IN PUBLIC PLACES THROUGHOUT THE NATION. THIS IS THE EXPECTED OUTCOME OF THE MESSAGE HE IS SENDING TO CONGRESS ON THE PROPOSALS FOR NEW CIVIL RIGHTS FOR AMERICAN NEGROES.

THE MOUNTING UNREST OVER THE RACIAL PROBLEM CONTINUED TODAY WITH MORE DEMONSTRATIONS IN CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND. IN BOSTON, MASS., ABOUT 3000 NEGRO SCHOOLCHILDREN BOYCOTTED THE SCHOOLS YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST WHAT NEGRO LEADERS CALL "DE FACTO" SEGREGATION.

SOME HOWEVER ATTENDED BOSTON TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL. BUT THE OTHERS CONGREGATED ACROSS THE STREET AT A LOCAL SOCIAL CENTRE. THERE, THEY WERE REGISTERED. SOME STAYED AT THE CENTRE TO ATTEND "FREEDOM CLASSES," WHERE THEY WERE INSTRUCTED IN "CITIZENSHIP AND THE FREEDOM MOVEMENT."
MASSACHUSSETTS EPISOCOPAL BISHOP ANSON STOKES, WHO BACKS THE MOVEMENT, AND THOMAS F. PETTIGREW, A PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY, RECEIVED THE CHILDREN AS THEY ARRIVED AT THE CENTRE.

THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE HOUSED AT CLASSES THERE WERE TAKEN BY BUS TO NINE OTHER "FREEDOM CENTRES". ALTOGETHER, MORE THAN HALF THE NEGRO STUDENTS IN BOSTON'S 13 JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS STAYED AWAY FROM THEM.
