Background: Dutch warships sailed into Copenhagen, October 29, and kept up a 300-year-old tradition.

On October 29, 1658, the Dutch started the habit. The Swedes were also trying to get in on the act. But their navy was not just planning a social call - they planned to stay. to make the point clear the preliminary announcement of arrival included pumping shells into Copenhagen.

The Dance were just about to call it a day when along came the Dutch and sent the Swedes packing. That made the Danes and the Dutch big pals. Said the Danes: "You are always welcome."
And so just for old times sake the Dutch dropped in for a social call.

Times have changed a little. Instead of barques and brigantines, they send frigates and submarines - in fact they sent De Zeven Provincien, the torpedo boat Glderland, the frigate Van Zijil and the submarine Tijgerhaai - but the idea is the same.
