  • Description

A rally attended by 35,000 socialist Peronists was held in Buenos Aires on Monday (11 March) to mark the first anniversary of the general election which swept the Peronists back to power.

The rally in the Atlanta football stadium came at a time when left wingers in the inland city of Cordoba some 400 miles (650 kilometres) north-west of Buenos Aires, were fighting gun battles with the police. At least seven people died in the shootings which started after a police revolt two weeks ago had ousted the alleged Marxist Governor of Cordoba, Senor Ricardo Obregon Cano.

In his resignation letter Senor Cano said National Government officials such as Interior Minister Senor Benito Llambi and Labour Minister Senor Ricardo Otero, had helped overthrow him. But the Argentine Government have since started a libel action against Senor Cano alleging "false imputations and inexactitudes" in the letter.

A strong police guard watched the demonstrators from helicopters as well as on the ground, but there was no trouble.

Rodolfo Giamberti, a Peronist Youth leader, addressed the crowd. He told them that now Peron was in power they must be infiltrators, equally determined to carry on the revolutionary struggle.

The crowd chanted "What's happening my General that the Popular Government is full of gorillas (anti-Peronists)" and slogans calling for a "Socialist Fatherland", as opposed to the rightwingers' support for a "Peronist Fatherland."
The day after the rally General Peron appointed right wing Peronist Senor Duilio Brunello as head of Cordoba Province. The only comfort for the left wingers was that Senor Brunello said he would dismiss the rebel police chief, Colonel Domongo Navorro.
