LIQUORI: "I like to run because I get a lot of satisfaction out of it. I get a lot of enjoyment just training with people. When I was young it seemed like a lot of work and as I get older I seem to be able to enjoy the training. In college the big thing is that you've got team mates and you've lived with them. You know, you live right in the dorm right next to each other and you can share the common goal. I live right now in Gainsville, Florida. We've got a nice group of guys -- they're just about ready to start running and win the races. A few of the fellas lived out at Grainsville, they're all married with cars. Again we've got that kind of group. I think that this has been a big reason that track work down there has become world famous."

Background: Marty Liquori, for several years America's top indoor middle-distance runner, began a spectacular comeback on January 25, when after spending a year on the sidelines after a serious heel injury he broke the four-minute barrier to come second in the famous Wannamaker Mile in Maddison Square Gardens. After months of careful training at Villanova University, Florida, he hoped to return to top form by winning the Olympian 1,500 metres at Maddison Square Gardens' during the most important meeting of the year, the Olympic Invitational Track Meet on Friday (8 February). He has won this race four times before. If he can win this time against top-class International competition, he is likely to set his sights on the 1976 Olympics. During his lay-off, however, he has been showing considerable interest in professional athletics and he may well be tempted to leave amateur competition long before the Olympics begin.
