STAVROPOULOS: "Mr. President, (indistinct).... is very clear. We support and urge the implementation of the resolutions of the United Nations. In this connection, I wish to express once again the highest esteem of the Greek government, for the way in which the Secretary General has carried out, with his usual patience, and dedication, his difficult and complicated mission of finding a solution to the Cyprus Problem. The Secretary General's thankless efforts in this direction are greatly appreciated by all those who earnestly desire a just settlement to this problem. Now, it is up to the Turkish side to abandon its intransigence and come forward with concrete proposals in a frame of mind conducive to the solution of this question."

UN OFFICIAL: "We shall now vote on the draft resolution A/32/L6, as a whole. Those in favour of the resolution, please signify. If all votes are correct, the voting is complete. The machine is locked."

UN OFFICIAL: "The result of the vote is as follows: in favour: 116; against: six; abstentions: 20. The draft resolution is adopted."

Background: The United Nations General-Assembly on Wednesday (9 November) passed a resolution for the U.N. Security Council to keep the Cyprus question under constant review. It also resolved to adopt 'all practical means' to have its past resolutions of the strife-torn Mediterranean island implemented. The resolution was passed with 116 votes in favour and six against. The General Assembly also wants the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities representatives to resume their two-year-old talks, which broke down last spring. In the Assembly, Greece's UN Ambassador Constantin Stavropoulos gave wind-up speech before the vote was taken.
